Gakuen Alice

A very sweet story about all kinds of love – friends, family, lovers among special children that you must read

Status: Complete

Young Mikan runs away to Tokyo to follow her best friend, Hotaru, who has been enrolled in an exclusive, secretive private school for geniuses. But it turns out that Alice Academy is a lot more than meets the eye. If Mikan wants to stay by Hotaru’s side, she has to both pass the strange “entrance exam” and face the even greater challenge of befriending her very odd new classmates.

I read this manga for the first time when I was only 14 so the – mix between fantasy and school life – story line attracted me a lot. The main protagonists are really young so you might figure it to be cute and fluffy, however it progress much darker later on (prepare tissues) that I’m surprised the manga didn’t get tagged as tragedy.

The love line is pretty obvious if you’re familiar with shoujo genre, yet the author really made it interesting to watch the interactions among the characters. Aside from the main figures, others have crucial roles that will be revealed as the story goes on as well.

For me there is no complain in the flow or details of the manga because it is thoroughly presented in the most possible way. In addition, the manga feels so real that sometimes you can imagine yourself as a student there, Higuchi Tachibana impressively creates another word that you can easily imagine yourself a part of the story is what I enjoy in the manga.

P/s: I was really obsessed with this manga since middle school but at that time it is still incomplete and popular that it was hard having the hard copies. It is really fortunate that couple years later the publisher in my country decided to re-publish the manga and I got the change to have the whole 31 volumes ^.^
