Deadman Wonderland

If you don’t mind a bloody love story, then this manga won’t do any harm

Igarashi Ganta, a seemingly ordinary student attending Nagano Prefecture’s middle school is our protagonist this time. This all changes when a strange person covered in blood and crimson armor floats through his classroom windows. Grinning madly, the Red Man massacres Ganta’s entire class but instead of killing him, embeds a red crystal shard in Ganta’s chest. Within days of the massacre, Ganta is declared the sole suspect and, following a quick trial, is sentenced to life imprisonment in Deadman Wonderland, a massive theme park like prison.

Kondou Kazuma and Kataoka Jinsei have been the perfect dou with the Sci-fi theme. One is in charge for the amazingly detailed art style and the other creates a high level of dark and unexpected storyline. Their mangas are usually marked with tragedy tag, so if you’re pretty soft with deaths, I recommend tissues (of course I’d never suggest anyone backing out on a great manga :”>).

The main character is young in age so you might feel frustrated on the unstable emotion on adapting the new life and handling the problems unlike other shounens. Nevertheless, he progresses later both on physically and emotionally (he must do so, though :))).

The manga is not prolonged to eternity, either (only 13 volumes) and the artists used it wisely and disclosed all the knots that need opened. You might fell satisfied (with a little bit of dissatisfaction – I’m not making any sense at all :))))) since “I guess you know” the desire for having another chapter or extra for the love story. But well, they are still young and the artists are not famous for portraying those kind of scenes so I couldn’t ask for more.

P/s: The dou is having a newest manga (2015) after the success of Deadman Wonderland with the similar genre. To be honest, the art is becoming more impressive with full of details on the modern weapons :((((( and of course, the story line is dark but astonishing as usual.

P/ss: I found out that they had a 4-koma spin-off of Deadman Wonderland between 2011 – 2012 with comedy tag but there is sadly no translation or raw 😥
